Roots & Reflections
A collage and meditation workshop series about New York City’s urban forest

“We spend our lives hurrying away from the real,
as though it were deadly to us.
‘It must be somewhere up there on the horizon’, we think.
And all the time it is in the soil, right beneath our feet.”

About the Roots & Reflections Series

Roots & Reflections is a workshop series that rebuilds our individual relationship with non-human life. Each workshop is guided by members of the urban forest. We learn the names and stories of urban trees, animals, and plants to create connections with nature in our daily lives.

A forest is a community made up of trees, plants, animals, soil, microorganisms, moss, lichen, and other living and nonliving materials. 7 million trees make up New York City’s forest, more information can be found on the New York City Tree Map.

Human agendas, instead of natural systems, govern how we plant and maintain the forest in citiesOffsetted. Residents of cities struggle to relate to nature in the constructed environment. Artificial landscapes, intentional or not, disconnect and divide humans and other natural life. This alienation is a direct result of prizing aesthetics and ornamentation over human and ecological health. Join Roots & Reflections to connect with and learn about nature in urban spaces.
